Vanilla Spice Summersweet is a dense deciduous shrub with raceme sporting extra large, highly fragrant white flowers in midsummer. The oblong dark green leaves have a golden yellow fall color. Best color when grown in full sun and moist well-drained soils. Vanilla Spice's flowers are nearly twice the size of other varieties.
Clethra alnifolia is noted for its special value in attracting large numbers of native bees. The nectar also attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, and the seeds provide food for birds.
