Midnight Marvel is a well branching deciduous shrub with a mounding habit. The long violet maple shaped leaves turn brilliant orange in fall. The fall color contrasts nicely with the huge 9” carmine red flowers with a prominent yellow tubular stamen that bloom mid-summer until the first frost attracting butterflies. Best bloom in full sun and rich, moist well-drained soils.
MAINTENANCE NEEDS: Low maintenance. Few problems if watered regularly and deeply with plenty of air circulation. Potential issues include canker, rust, leaf spot, and occasional insects. Japanese beetles can cause severe leaf damage if left unchecked. Leaves will scorch if soils dry out.
