Ruby Red Hydrangea macrophylla is a compact deciduous shrub with glossy serrated deep green leaves that turns dark red in fall. The vivid mophead flowers bloom on both old and new wood through summer and are a rich garnet red in alkaline soils or neutral soils, while strongly acidic soils have purple flowers, and mature to dusky burgundy, Best bloom in partial sun and rich, moist well-drained soils.

MAINTENANCE NEEDS: Medium Maintenance. Mulch soil to maintain moisture and overwinter. If pruning is needed do so after flowering. Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew. Aphids are occasional problems.
