Niobe Clematis is a deciduous perennial vine that can be used for climbing or a groundcover and pointy green foliage with no fall color. The huge velvety deep red flowers with bright yellow stamen bloom on new and old wood all summer are followed by fluffy seed pods. Grows best with partial sun on the roots and full sun on the vines, moist well-drained soils. Needs support to climb.
MAINTENANCE NEEDS: Medium Maintenance. Water regularly, do not let soil dry out. It will need support if used for climbing. Prune back dead or weak vines in late winter and trim back remaining vines to first buds seen. Potential diseases include wilt (can be fatal), powdery mildew, and rust. Potential pests include scale, mites, weevils, earwigs, and slugs.
LANDSCAPE USES: Accents or Group Plantings, Borders, Woodland Gardens, Naturalized Areas, Rock Gardens, Groundcover, Walls and Trellises, and Containers.
COMPANION PLANTS: Lantana, Maiden Grass, Wisteria
